A special movie date

Indeed it is a Musical Dream!

Royston Tan's latest musical-themed movie 881 was yet another really heavily publicised movie for the whole of last week. There was virtually no one who doesn't know about it and even my mother, who has never been to the movies since 30years ago, got excited with all the newspapers articles talking about the movie.

First got to know about Royston Tan was through his movie <15>. It was a banned movie here in Singapore but I was lucky enough to be able to watch it during one of the sociology lecture. It has left me with deep impression as it's really violent and I can still vividly remember the scene where a group of rebellious teenagers cutting away other guy's ear.

Well, I really do support local directors and thus 881 is a must-watch. Even Rush Hours also got to step aside:P

Looking at my mum's enthusiasm, I gladly initiated to bring her and my grandma to the movies for the first time after she gave birth to my elder sisters. Grandma's rheumatism has taken a toll on her legs and she turned down the offer even though she is an avid TV fan. She was happily telling me about the current Korea drama Jin Shun and asking me if I saw Zoe Tay's commercial when we visited her in the morning before heading to the cinema.

Mum's enthusiasm was the most unexpected... She seldom watch any sitcoms or movies at home, her interest lies in singing and thus most the time she would be immersing in music and not the TV. Thus, this movie date was even more special and heartwarming:)

While she has not brought me to the movies, my sisters did, this time is my chance to accompany her to revisit all those nice memories of stepping back into the cinema after we have all grown up.

The 2 hours movie was packed with lots of colours and costume changes and 80% of the content were in Hokkien, fortunately there was English/Chinese subtitles. It's just a very simple story which anyone can write in their secondary school essays but the essence of the whole film lies in the GeTai culture of Singapore. If GeTai will to be disappeared in 50years time, Royston's movie would be a great source of encyclopedia for the future generations.

A special movie with an extra special one, hopes this would bring back many fond memories in time to come:)

Do check out 881 aka Papaya and support local production!
