Amazing July

Time really flies... it's just a few day short to my official infinite vacation since the start of May:P

Makes me really wonder why i'm still enjoying so much of my holidays despite i've already used up 1/4 of a year on it .. haha.

July for one has been a pretty amazing one since Button Bear & I have spent the weekends buzzing all around the little red dot meeting up common friends from the IMH volunteering group and OCSV2004 and spending time with our families.

First of all was my commencement on the unique & memorable triple seven date which also marks my sisters birthday and two weddings.

In between this time, I have also attended a baking class from the Serangoon CC and was invited to Elaine's place for a scrap booking session. Then comes the IMH volunteers chalet, Alicia's wedding and GuanXi's first birthday happening all on the second weekend of this month.

During my free days, i'd be trying out recipes (as you have already seen on previous post) and trying to blog as much as i can in between my busy days being a pseudo Tai Tai.

Not only so, i also went on an exploratory trip to search for a baker's shop in Newton area and visited PS - the shopping heaven for scrap bookers since there are a few shops which sells those 'Oh-So-Pretty!' (but really expensive!) stuff.

On the third weekend...
After a long wait, we had another outing for the our IMH residents this year!

While ECP has been an all-time favorite for the various outing over the year (except the one i've planned), this time we did something new and that's the sculpting of those large sandcastles.

Didn't know the existence of this activity in ECP until this time. There are professional guidance if you make a purchase of the sandcastle tool kits (cost $25-$38) from the shop, located next to the hawker center resembling a large sandcastle. The 100m shoreline in front of the shop is the area where you can play around with the kits and build beautiful sandcastles under the guidance of beach hunks & babes.

Over the weekend, also spend some time with all for a nice 'Bang' session @ Joanne's place and then KTV at this '$10 Family KTV' in Chinatown :P

In the final week of July... some how miracles just happened.

Just when i got so vexed and anguish about the whole job search process in the mid-week (and even sob quite a bit over it), there comes 2 offers for tuition assignment on Thursday and eventually i secured one of them:)

Not only so....

I was just randomly flipping through the papers on Friday morning and saw a advertorial stating the need for promoters for dental products during a roadshow in August and the pay seems attractive ($8/hr).

Since mama-lemon has already started yanking me to earn my own keeps while looking for a perm job, i decided to call up the agency. Immediately that afternoon, i went for the interview and got briefed on the job scoop and I'm really excited and keen to take part in it!;D

There's no sales involved but the job scoop was that of an educator to educate the public on dental health knowledge and to raise awareness of the importance to take good care of our dental health. So yesterday, several of us (most on university/ poly vacations) went down for a 5 hrs training session to learn about 'chim' things like plaque, gingivitis, periodontitis, causes of tooth sensitivity and also the correct brushing techniques.

So to speak, starting next week, I'll be hopping on the Colgate Road Show!
Locations are Woodlands Causeway Point, Toa Payoh HDB Hub & Bukit Panjang Plaza.

More details coming up when my shifts are allocated.
Ps: There will be Free dental checkup, dental consultation & Free Colgate toothpaste!

Finally, Going Green!

You know the weather has been so weird lately?
July shouldn't feel like this....
(I have been faithfully tightly tagged under the blanket every night cos it felt so cold!)

Now, it feels like last December which has been recorded with the highest rainfall.

Global warming is real!
Many innocent lives have been lost and affected by weather destruction.

Start doing your little part* to save our Mother Earth and also people out there who are suffering from the wreaks that the freak weather has caused.

*Use less plastic bags, use less air-con, switch off all electricity of when not in used, use less paper (use recycle paper), recycle your plastics, eat less beef or even better don't eat them! Eat more veg instead;)

[The demand for beef have pushed Cattle farmers to clear large pieces of forest, which can counter-fight the ever rising CO2, and convert them into pasture to rear the cows. On the other hand, grow of veggies have little harm on the environment and even helps to promote the production of O2 and reduce CO2 in our environment.]

That's my joyous amazing July for you!:)

Scones Scones!

Another baking little experiment of mine~ this time round, it's scones!

Don't know if most of you know what scones is but it is sold in 'neighborhood' bakeries like FourLeaves and also many other upmarket cafes in town.

It's a pity that the branch in CCK always sold them as a pack of 4 and i hardly want to buy them cos at the end of the day, i would be stuffing down the 4 scones myself since no one else in the family likes the 'hardy' texture (crisp on the outside and slightly soft in the inside) of the pastry.

The texture is not always that hard, 'magic' can be done to retain the moist in the pastry so that it will be soft and fluffy (in between the texture of bread and cake).

So after the flop attempt of the non-buttery butter biscuit, this morning i attempted to try out the scorn recipe in this book that i borrowed from the regional library in cck:

So i started out with the plain scones which consist of v simple ingredients of self-raising flour, pinch of salt, small amount of butter, milk and water. Wanted to try out this so that if it turns out alright, I could also bring some to my diabetic grandma.

Initially, i was quite reluctant to invite my friendly kitchen assistant to help out but in the end, i decided to employ her since i dislike 'rubbing' of the butter and flour together and could leave her to do that since it was her favorite pastime during home-econ class:P

Guessed i've added the fluid mixture (milk+water) too quickly into the rubbed mixture of flour and butter and resulted in a rather wet and elastic dough. Both the sight and feel of the batter is a great put off. It's so yucky and at the spur of moment i even thought of restarting all over! *hee*

Usually, doughs that are supple should be just a little wet and more to the drier side. So we kept adding more flour to dry up the excess fluid in the dough to the point that i has become a little dry. Thus, we hurried pick up the dough and place it on the floured table top for shaping using a round cutter.

Blur me...

The book stated to press the dough to thickness of 2cm before using a sharp cutter to cut the dough. Guess i've really lost touch with maths despite the fact that i've been giving maths tuition throughout the uni days... my estimation was twice the height stated (ignoring the fact that self-raising flour will RISE!) *hee Blur*

While the recipe stated that it should make 12 scones but i only manage to get 4 scones *faint*

Finally after a high temperature baking....

Mudita's Plain aka 'Ko-Song' Scones!

(sitting on the rack for cooling)

The slight discoloration was due to the fact that my dough was too tall and thus it did not cook that thoroughly and which explains for the absent of 'a hollow' sound when tapped on the scones.

But to make up for that lost, we quickly cover the scones under a towel so that the water vapor (due to heat) will condense on the scones, making it soft and nice to chew on ;D

The verdict! The towel method works! The scones were soft and moist :D

So in the end, i still kept two of them for grandma... geez.

Just one more pic!

The nicest from the batch, sitting comfortably on a cushioned tissue above my really expensive paper from Made With Love.

Look! It's Similing happily for You ;D

Choc-Tipped Butter Shortcake

Last Thursday, i tried a new recipe and it really got me enthralled!

The savoring of it was superb and I was deeply impressed that i could make such a nice biscuit on the first try;D

Just a simple recipe and yet it tasted so well *happy*

Mama-lemon got excited too and wanted me to bake it for the coming CNY. I told her that i needed more practice to ensure the consistency of my baking technique... haha:P

Overall, the cookie is not buttery (fairly light) and the texture is crispy on the crust and melts in your mouth.

So that explains why i wanted to bake more of them so soon!

Thus today, i decided to employed a kitchen assistant to help me and she's none other that my 3rd sis -who is currently in the list of 'free-loaders' in my household & going to start work on 1st August. We begun work at 6pm after mama-lemon finished using the kitchen for dinner and worked through the hour.

Blur me (again)!
I weigh the butter incorrectly and forgot to add in the flour gradually -_-*

So, the heavenly taste of it did not occur this time round:P

To make up for the lost, i've paid much more attention to the decoration and hope that it will conceal the buttery taste of it *ssshshhhhh*

Here's Presenting to You...

Resembling éclairs & donuts!

Last but not least, nice packaging do count! *wink*

It's Getting into Me!

It's been 2 weeks since the joyous day.

Starting to ponder what i can do after being 'kicked out of school officially'.
On a happy note, Prof Pauline Straughan (my favorite vice-dean of arts), has said during the commencement that the advantage of an arts grad is that he/she could do anything and everything. Ultimately, it's up to one's imaginations to explore what they can do in time to come.

*Sigh* How vague?
What do i really want then?

Hmmm ok... Let's see!

Teaching?
(No, tuition is already enough, don't wanna bring home stuff to do after working hours)

HR?
(No, i hate poking into other's business, just want my 21days of annual leave and staff benefits)

Finance Sector -Insurance, Accounts, Banking?
(Don't really like the finance sector. Not my interest and I wouldn't force myself to go into the line for the $, happiness is still a priority)

Stat Boards?
(I really don't mind leh.. haha. My dream job would be one that's interesting and allow me to learn many new things and off course good prospect :P)

TaiTai?
(Wow! i would really love to be one.. haha:P well, not for the fame but rather the $ and time which will allow me to invest in all my hobbies like baking, scrap booking, dancing, piano, floral arrangement, make-up & cosmetic etc. Come to think of it, who wouldn’t want to be a TaiTai?)

*Knock myself awake*
A dream which deem a bit too far-fetch since all at the current stage, i only have lots of time and not $ :P

Back to employment....

Actually i really do have something in mind but somehow, maybe i'm not good enough for them?

Can some guardian angels kindly grand me the opportunity and guide me along?

*Wait Wait Wait...*
How long more?

*Sigh*
Back to square one~

Tomorrow onwards i must be more keen to find my dream job!

*Blah*
I shall go bake now! ;D

Thursdays Baking Spree!

Finally a day to bake! Yippy!

Last Thursday, I decided to try out Valerie's recipe of the Strawberry Sweetheart Cheese Cake and guess it turned out quite well;D

I was so keen to sign up for Valerie's course despite it being held at the Serangoon CC (considered quite far from home) as it has rekindled fond memories I had from eating it in school with Angeline. I have not seen it being sold at any bakeries apart from that only time which we bought from the Arts Bazzar @ forum and just to add on, it cost $1.20/square aka 1 heart.

Happened to chance upon a local blogger Sweet Decadenze just last month and to my delight, she has posted many pictures of Strawberry Sweet Hearts! Subsequently, I got hold of information from her regarding the courses taught by Valerie at various CC across our little red dot:)

This is a painstaking labourous recipe, really really time consuming to 'bake' or 'make'.

It took me a grand total of 10hrs which mainly consist of waiting time..

While mine doesn't look as nice as those baked by Valerie herself (the strawberry should sink below the red jelly'o layer) but never the less, it still tasted as great;D

Some pictures to fill your senses....

Busy Buzzing all over the place

Long Post Ahead....

For the wedding, I've been buzzing around our little red dot to look for the most appropriate gifts that Button Bear's Sister & her husband would like.

Based on my analysis... (haha)
They are those romantic kind who like privacy and couple time so i went to Muji in Bugis with net on Wednesday to get a set of towels and also an acralic frame.

The basket, glasses and candles look good too but this would badly exceed my budget:P

In the end I've also gotten a bottle of Lavender Massage Oil from Body Shop, a pack of Ferrero Rocher and a Pink Sparkling Wine for them.

The pretty pink wine was however not taken in the picture.

After ending a short shopping cum temple trip with net on Wednesday at Bugis area, Thursday was yet another busy day.

Initially there was only tuition followed by a baking class in the late afternoon however, Elaine & Alan wanted to meet for lunch and hence I tagged along and joined them at Barista Express, a cafe in Clifford Center at Raffles Place for lunch.

'The Barista Express (BE) café, a ‘first-of-its-kind’ cafe in Singapore, where people with psychiatric disabilities are provided supportive employment in a business enterprise operating in a commercial district.' [IMH media release]

Having heard so much of it, we finally got a chance to visit it!

Over all, the fares are simple and reasonably priced and we are satisfied with the service of the cafe:) If you have chance, do drop by for a coffee and lend your support for them!

Apart from that, Elaine also went for a scrap booking class earlier and she was really keen to show me what she has done (i was equally excited as well:P). Eventually, she kindly invited me over to her house on Friday for a scrap booking session as i was planning to do a card for the sister's wedding!

*Elated! So nice of Elaine!*

After our short lunch, we were all actually heading to different places but since Elaine had nothing on and was about to go home, Alan jio her to accompany him for a visit to the SAVH (Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped) so we took the North-South Line together and travel down to our respective destinations.

On our way.... my tuition kid's mum called to say that he has got remedial till late so I decided to cancel the class since there's no way I could go at a later time with my baking class at 7.30pm in Amk. So i was more happy to go to SAVH with them then going to see the kid, who blown my top off earlier in the week, and i was not prepared to be nice to him for the class:P

After meeting Xinyi, the four of us make our way down to SAVH for the orientation undertaken by a staff there.

It's definitely a eye-opening experience!

Braille, those embossed dots you always seen in the lift are done using a special type-writter when it is printed on papers.

Books have to be fed into a reading programme (created by Microsoft) so that the two visually-handicapped translators employed at SAVH can hear the sentences and typed them into Braille using the machine. These dots requires a lot of spacing (in order for people to feel them comfortably), thus books of about 30 pages can come up to 4 times aka 120 pages in the Braille language.

Apart from this, many many diagrams in school textbooks like mathematics graphs, topo maps, the body anatomy etc too, need to be translated into embossing texture so that it can be felt by people who are visually handicapped. It's really a taxing and uphill task since all of which are done manually by one of the staff at SAVH and she receive occasional help from school students who go there for weekly volunteering. It's such a chim process which I'm at a lost for description. Guess u would only understand if you get to see what they actually do:)

After a short orientation and small chit-chats with various staffs there, we ended our short trip while i took bus with Xinyi to my baking class;D

Button Bear was so nice to pick me up from the CC after my baking class and drove me home!;)

Friday Friday!
Scrap booking @ Elaine's was ON!

The always patient and encouraging Button Bear tagged along and we run some errand to get GuanXi's Bday Prezzie from Toy'R'Us @ Tampines Mall before going to Elaine's Place.

At 9pm, we started the scraping session while BB tried finding stuff to entertain himself and finally decided to read a book from Elaine's collection.

So 1hr passed... 2nd hr passed... 3rd, 4th too!

We were finally done at 1.30am! *GOSH*
[my commencement is just next day & BB got get home to prepare for the sis's chinese wedding]

BB was so tired that we was already sleeping on the floor at the corner of Elaine's room while we were doing up the card.

Finally, it was done;D
N73's resolution is pretty bad at night or dim places.

But nonetheless, here's the painstaking product that Elaine has helped me with and it's hanginf nicely on Elaine's room door knob. There's also a nice pull-out card in the pocket at the right bottom corner of the card.

Since it was not getting any early and by the time we both go home respectively, it would have been very 'early', Elaine took us in for the night and we bunked in her room for several hours before leaving at 7am in the morning.

Saturday 07.07.07
Commencement & Wedding Bliss

Coincidentally, BB's cousin aka 'meng', who has to go to his house to welcome the arrival of the groom's car, lived just below Elaine and he got a lucky ride from us in the morning else he would have to travel alone to Seng Kang on a very early Saturday morning under the heavy downpour.

After the morning ceremony, BB quickly changed into a smart outfit for my commencement later and we traveled back to CCK at 10am and I got myself a little rest (super tired cos only slept 3hrs) while he again, hurried off to get some stuff before coming back to fetch my family and I to UCC for the ceremony.

Got a nice surprise, BB went to City Hall to get a Single Stalk Rose Bouquet from Secret Garden!
*So sweet* of him to travel the distance;)

Was a bit kan jiong before the ceremony.. partly there was lot of traveling & was suffering from fatigue from the lack of sleep but it all turned out well.

Straight after, the whole of UCC was so packed and after meeting Suyi, I hurried to leave the place since we have all went earlier to took pictures already. We send mama-lemon home and then went back to Seng Kang/Punggol for the wedding reception at the newly-wed's home and then finally home sweet home!

(Left) Nicely wrapped pink prezzie & card for the newly-wed!

Triple Seven marks a new least of life!;D

Graduation Bliss! 07.07.07

Finally...

After 16 years of school life, it's the second time to put on the graduation robe!

The first time was during kindergarten graduation and back then, i was so blur that i didn't tell mama-lemon that the school has some graduation photo-taking. Actually, i really didn't have any recollections of the teacher making any announcement regarding the photo-taking.
* very blur wooden block*
>.<

***
I was really v v blur back then.

Another classic example...

U know, those times your mum would always pack a nice cute water bottle for you to sch?
Mine was a mini 200ml pink plastic bottle with a shoulder strap and i absolutely loved it.

One day, I was so blur and left it in class!

The teacher was really kind. She hung it on the white board in class the next day, expecting someone to claim it. However, i was so scared that i will be severely reprimanded for my forgetfulness and did not dare to ask her for it.

So, the first day passed and followed by another. Finally after 1 month!
*Gone*

Think they chuck it to the bin eventually.

...my childhood stupidity:P

***
[continue from above]

And i missed the photo-taking session in school!

How pathetic would it be if I do not have a picture on my 1st cert?
SO...
Mama-lemon brought me to the neighborhood market's studio to take a nice shot
& *piak* it's now nicely pasted in my 1st cert;D

(picture to be added soon)

[so kaiwii back then with my signature blur smile! hee:P]

Apparently, the blurness has persisted.

Had a really bad shock earlier as i thought i have forgotten to signed up for commencement shortly after the registrar office has closed all registration for commencement.

To my utmost amazement, I've registered in March!
*Super Kiasu*

Thanks Mama-Lemon!
*with endless gratitude*

Thanks to all too!
(including 'wish u were here';D)

Lastly, also the Pink Button Bear who accompanied me through my uni days:)

*Joy Upon Joy*
